Normally I’m not a big fan of yoga retreats for specific groups of people. Although, I’m slowly changing my mind about it. This because I’m starting to feel that the hunger of connectedness is growing and it might be a good idea to connect with your fellow yogis and at the same time creating a brotherhood. This is why I’m going to start a series for some minority groups, starting with the LGBTQ-community.

Why start with this group? Well, besides that there are still a lot of prejudices about this group as well as punishments against it in some countries. Going on a gay yoga retreat might be a great opportunity to release yourself from the stress of being afraid, being judged or even being rejected.

So, men out there, leave your Grindr at home because at these retreats you won’t be needing it anyway!

Why Gay Yoga Retreats?

As I mentioned before, I’m not pro dividing everyone into groups. I’m a gay man myself and I have to say that whenever I go to a class, I hope to be surrounded by people who accept me for who I am. Luckily, yogis are most likely to be open-minded and therefore there’s a lot of acceptance.

Besides this, what I also missed at most yoga classes and retreats is someone to share my experiences with. Not just to experience accepting who I truly am, but also on the constant struggles about it. Therefore, going on a gay yoga retreat might be an excellent opportunity to connect with like-minded yogis. It’s a great experience to share your fears and struggles with the people who have gone true the same.

And as a third point, you might find your future partner here as well ;). But that’s no guarantee of course.

Let’s begin with a couple of great yoga retreat especially for gay men!

Gay Yoga Retreats Europe

Italy Gay Travels (Prices start from US$ 1.208)
September 26th – October 3rd

Puglia, located in the heel of Italy, an astonishing place to be at during spring and fall as temperatures aren’t too extreme yet for your yoga practice.

The latter is extremely important as this yoga retreat is offering you sessions that are worthy of a daily three hours practice. You don’t have to do the three hours in a row of course. In general, most yoga retreats offer a 1 hour or a 2-hour practice, so getting three hours a day is quite something. So, if you are looking for a great spiritual experience than this is the place to be.

Not only that, but the organizers give you the choice if you’d like to work on your spiritual practice, or if you’d rather have some sightseeing as well. You can decide whether you like to stay at the property to meditate and do more yoga while you are enjoying the views, or if you’d like to go for a walk into town and do other great things.

This retreat isn’t for beginners though, as you’ll be diving deeper into yoga poses. Some experience is required and I’d suggest you’ve got about one year’s experience if you’d like to enter this retreat. On top of that, Tim Groen only takes in 16 participants. Making it an intimate retreat where you can ask this experienced yoga teacher all of your yoga questions personally.

Not just that, but this retreat can actually kind as well as credits for your Yoga Alliance certificate. YA wants you to continue your education and this is definitely a bonus for your teacher’s credits! Just be sure to ask Tim for a certificate!

YogaNu (Prices start from €500)
Various Dates

India is of course the country where yoga originated and therefore it might be a great opportunity for every yogi to make this trip. Being close to the founders of this lifestyle we all love. And I’m even proud to say that there is a gay yoga trip where you’ll be able to meet like-minded people on your spiritual path!

This retreat is a bit between a retreat and a cultural trip, as you won’t be staying in just one location. Which makes it quite amazing for those who’d like to see a bit more of the country. India itself is a big country, so enjoy the richness of what every city has to give. On this trip, you’ll be visiting Kolkata, Bodh Gaya, Varanasi, and Agra.

And before I forget, you’ll be doing yoga as well of course ;). The retreat and yoga classes will be organized by Mark, who has a studio for naked yoga in Paris. On this trip, classes won’t be naked, which makes it an open retreat for all men (yes, even if you aren’t gay or bi you can come too!).

There is sooooo much more to talk about regarding this retreat, but if you’d like to know everything in detail, I’d just suggest you go to the retreat page, right here!

PS: There is also a yoga retreat with a contemporary art tour (in India) if that would be something more for you!

Tom Barber Yoga (Price: € 850)
September 19th – 25th

And then, a naked gay yoga retreat. Within this retreat, the organizer Tom doesn’t only like to welcome gay men, but also everyone that fits in the spectrum of gay, bi and transgender. As long as you see yourself as a man, you are welcome.

This yoga retreat won’t only be a gay yoga retreat, but it will also contain nudity. This will make that you will be confronted with your boundaries. It’s not always easy to go naked in a group that you don’t know yet. But it’s a great way to discover what kind of thoughts will pop up when you do.

The group will be very intimate as there are only 12 participants allowed. This makes that you won’t have to be worried that you’ll get lost in the group. For everyone participating there will be space to share what’s going on and how to deal with it.

The retreat will be fully catered and the retreat leader Tom asks not to bring any recreational drugs or alcohol. This will make that the retreat itself is very pure and that you don’t escape with your feelings into sustenance to push them away again.

The retreat itself is also not that expensive for a seven-day retreat. For more information about it, click here.

It’s a stereotype that only women can enjoy a luxurious location like this retreat has to offer. Men shouldn’t always be buff and enjoying those manly things, whatever they are. At this retreat, you can enjoy the amazingly looking pool, enjoy some deliciously looking food and many more things!

As someone who’s also part of the LGBT+ community, I really appreciate you taking the time to find these amazing retreats. I’m still a closeted bisexual so it’s somehimes hard for me to not speak freely about my sexuality and thus far, I haven’t found any support group where I live. We’re basicallu in 2020 and I still cant believe people have so much hatred towards the community that we’re forced to join certain groups just to feel accepted.

Wow. You really got me with this article.

I am an amateur of this spiritual sport called yoga, as I like to say. This year I set out to see other cultures, people and discover the spirituality of the famous places for yoga. I would like to go to Bali, Indonesia where there are many people who practice this ritual and whom I have heard are among the best. I think the price of $ 300 is nothing considering the impressive locations and the wonderful landscapes where we can relax. There will definitely be 3 unforgettable days in Bali.

Thanks for sharing with us this amazing article. Wish you all the best !
